My Money Story: Why I Started This Blog

Hey there! Welcome to what I hope becomes your go-to place for all things money.

I’m so glad you’re here, and I want to start by sharing something personal with you. My relationship with money didn’t begin in a classroom or from reading textbooks; it started in my childhood, watching the people I loved navigate their own financial journeys.

Growing up, I was that curious kid who always asked “why?” about everything, especially when it came to money. Why did some people seem to stress about it while others didn’t? Why did money conversations make adults uncomfortable? And most importantly, why did it seem like such a mystery when it affected literally everything in our lives?

Let me start with something my dad told me that stuck with me forever: “Don’t eat with your ten fingers.”

Now, before you think this is about table manners, let me explain what he really meant.

The Two Moments That Shaped Everything

Growing up, I had a front-row seat to two very different money stories that shaped my entire mindset about finances.

First, the struggle: I watched some close family members go through some tough financial times. You know that feeling when you want to help, but you’re just a kid and don’t know how? That was me. I saw how money stress affected everything: their mood, their relationships, their ability to sleep at night. It broke my heart seeing someone I loved go through that when I felt like it could have been avoided with the right knowledge and planning.

Then, the success: At the same time, I was watching my father handle his business and money matters completely differently. I became fascinated and started asking him questions about everything. He even let me help with the financial side of his business sometimes.

Here’s what amazed me: my dad retired from his job, and for several years, we never lacked anything. Not once. My parents were incredibly enterprising; every business they touched seemed to prosper because they were always looking for ways to add value to people’s lives.

One day, my curiosity got the better of me. “Dad, how have we survived all these years after you retired without ever going without?”

His answer changed my life: He had invested heavily while working in shares, stocks, and his own thriving businesses. The bonuses and returns from those investments were enough to support our family for decades. His only regret? He wished he had invested even more in all his children’s names so he could transfer those investments to us when we grew up.

That’s when he said those words that became my guiding principle: “Don’t eat with your ten fingers.” He explained how his disciplined savings had allowed him to take advantage of investment opportunities when they came up.

Two different money stories. Two completely different outcomes. And suddenly, my path became crystal clear.

What I Decided Right Then and There

Those two contrasting experiences lit a fire in me. I made myself a promise that day:

When I started working or had my own business, I would handle my finances so well and be incredibly successful at it. I was going to figure this money thing out, not just for me, but because I never wanted to watch someone struggle like that again.

I realised something important: most of us didn’t learn about money growing up. We had a different perspective on money. We weren’t taught in school how to make money, manage it, or multiply it. Our parents hardly talked to us about it, and honestly, many of them were figuring it out themselves.

But here’s what I knew we could do differently: we could learn from that gap and teach ourselves and our children how money works.

So I started reading everything I could get my hands on about money, budgeting, saving, and investing. I became that kid who got genuinely excited whenever I spotted a personal finance book. I know that might sound a bit funny, but trust me on this!.

When I started working, I doubled down on this commitment. I kept reading financial literacy books, testing strategies, and treating every paycheck as a learning opportunity. But here’s the game-changer: I realised that money isn’t the enemy or some mysterious force, it’s simply a tool.

Here’s What I’ve Learned

The good news? Managing money well isn’t rocket science. It’s not about being perfect or never making mistakes (I’ve made mistakes on my money journey). It’s not about having a huge income or depriving yourself of everything fun. I also learned that building wealth is a marathon, not a sprint.

Over the years, I’ve mastered my relationship with money by treating it exactly like what it is: a tool. Just like a car gets you where you need to go, money is simply a tool that helps you build the life you want.

Once I shifted my mindset to see money as a tool rather than something to fear or stress about, everything changed. I learned how to make it work FOR me instead of feeling like I was always working for it.

It’s about having a system that works for your life. It’s about making intentional choices instead of just hoping everything works out. And it’s about starting wherever you are right now, not where you think you should be.

Why I’m Here (And Why You’re Welcome Here Too)

I’m so excited about starting this blog because I get to share money principles that work and help people build financial confidence and take control of their finances. This is a no-judgment zone where I share what I’ve learned and learn from you through your feedback and comments.

Look, I’m not here to judge anyone’s financial situation. We all start somewhere different. Some of us learned about money early, and others are figuring it out as adults. Some have had setbacks; others are just getting started. All of that is perfectly okay.

What I am here for is to share what I’ve learned in the simplest, most helpful way possible. Because I believe everyone deserves to feel confident about their money. Everyone deserves to sleep peacefully knowing they can handle whatever comes their way. And everyone deserves to chase their dreams without money being the thing that stops them.
